Chrono Trigger: Melphyx (Early)
0From What I've seen a lot of people don't fight Melphyx until the endgame and while I can't blame them I wanted to show that you can take on this particular optional boss early.
Melphyx has a couple gimmicks. He's gonna drain your HP with earthquakes until you actually start the fight against him so heal up periodically to be safe.
Second he has a core that the boss will drain health from but it will eventually die. You'll want to charm it for a speed capsule but I'm resetting after this fight so who cares. Instead you really want to kill the core after a turn or two so you can get the TP rewards but that'll cause the boss to start spamming magic attacks like an asshat. Thankfully there's no status effects involved here.
Lastly the boss increases defense every time it's attacked and only loses defense if hit with an ice move, which does no damage. Because of this Marle/Nadia is key to victory. Glenn can also work but he has lower TP than Nadia and can't learn haste so it'll just be needlessly frustrating with him.
I'll do a more proper fight against this boss when I tackle the Fiona questline a little while later (like one or two arcs from now)
to start this quest you need to reach the kingdom of Zeal and tell the lady at the palace to keep the plant safe. (you can also start the quest later because she survives the cataclysm) she's presumably Fiona's Great^n Grandmother because that will cause the sandy vortex to open up in the middle ages. While the boss is rough you can totally handle the enemies here if you have a level 2 spell unlocked and while the enemies don't respawn the TP they give is fantastic plus the items down here are really good. I'd recommend unlocking some of the mysterious chests before progressing the story.
Lastly MAKE SURE AYLA KNOWS CHARM BEFORE PROGRESSING. There's some enemies in earthbound village called mudbeasts. Charming them gets you one of the strongest helmets in the game and they don't respawn once you kill the fire and ice beast.
