Exterminator, 1989 Premier Technology/Gottlieb
ABSOLUTELY WEIRD fixed-screen 3D game in which you control a giant disembodied hand (!) taking out invading pests in each room of a house-- although that's not the main goal. The main goal is to scoot tiles on the floor so that one column of floor space is FREE of tiles. To shuffle the tiles, you must kill bugs; then their corpses will fall onto the floor, scooting the tiles. Ways to kill the bugs include squishing them with your hand (use a button), smushing floor-crawling invaders (use another button), or HUG the left wall with the hand and press another button to fire out of your fingertip at the bugs (WTF!). As you fire along the wall, holding down the fire button, you can move the joystick around to aim elsewhere with the fire. A pesky wasp will try to land on your hand and sting you (stinging, biting, shooting, etc. enemies will sap a bit of energy from your hand). Wiggle the joystick to shoo the wasp away for a bit-- don't try to smush it with your hand or you'll get stung. Many enemies don't hurt you; so just keep track of the ones that do (though killing non-dangerous bugs when the coast is clear to turn those tiles can't hurt). Here and there you'll play bonus stages-- one type simply has you shooting rats running about on the garage shelves for 2,500 a pop, and the other has you crushing as many rolling objects as you can-- each are timed. After clearing all rooms in a house, you drive on to the next house to start it all again. The graphics are nice and the action is decent but boy is the game weird.. When all houses on a street are cleared, you have one more insanely hard area to complete.. you have several waves of each type of enemy coming at you en masse.. if you die even ONCE you are forced back to the previous house. Screw that! A warp trick exists on the 1st and 3rd house's kitchen-- shoot in the freezer when it opens to warp to the next house for a big bonus. Odd, odd game!
