An interesting quirk of the 2014 PHB Assassin is that their Assassinate feature (auto crit on hits against surprised enemies) is that it works with spells as well as attacks. In this build, I combine this with Evocation Wizard and the Bugbear race to create a stealthy hybrid burst damage dealer and controller. Importantly, this feature only works against surprised enemies, so I incorporate some tactics that should help our character and the party get surprise. For the sake of my math, I assumed we get surprise 25% of the time.
Would you want to play a character like this? I personally find the potential RP and story of this character pretty compelling, and I think it would be a fun build to play even if surprise is infrequent, as we are still a wizard, after all.
