Part 2. Holy crap is this game freaking fantastic. I know the PC version is supposed to have issues but i ran into none. No de-sync in the cutscenes or volume issues. What I did run into was an amazing game. This is easily one of my favorite games. It seamlessly mixes in God of War styled combat into a very Legend of Zelda styled 3D game. I played on the hardest difficult, Apocalyptic, and the challenge was on point. The game kinda starts out like Metroid where you have all of these cool powers and have them stripped and you need to reacquire them. So combat at first is kinda clunky and I was a little surprised at how not great it was feeling and upset the only way to get out of danger was to dodge, which had no i-frames. eventually you unlock the ability to block and the even counter. That's when combat really started to feel good. The timing is super forgiving for the counter as well, the only downside is that you automatically counter hit and are then exposed to enemy follow-up attacks. The good thing is that you can cancel your attack and counter again. It's great. You also unlock 2 sub weapons that you can switch on the fly. There is a fist and a scythe, each with their own upgrades that you can unlock. Enemies drop souls that you can spend in a shop to increase your health, power, mana and abilities. The shop also acts as a fast travel point and they are scattered all over the sprawling overworld. This game has a ton of nooks and crannies that items are hidden in. It's great. You also can find an enhancement that allows you locate hidden items on the map. Very helpful. The enhancements are cool to. They have passive abilities that are applied just by owning them and active abilities that are only activated by equipping them. You only can have one equipped at a time but each weapon has a slot. For a game that came out in 2010 I really enjoyed the graphcis and aesthetics. Granted the post-apocalyptic world is a bit played out at this point, when it's done well I do enjoy the setting. And this game is no exception. The areas you go to are pretty cool. Rundown old mansions housing giant spiders. old flooded train stations, a huge desert filled with massive sand worms just to name a few. And all of them are a joy to wander around and well laid out. The game is pretty linear, but does offer items in out of reach areas that will require you to come back when you have the correct tool.. Speaking of which is where the Zelda inspiration is very prevalent. There are a handful of dungeons and each has a tool that you acquire which allows you to make progress and each boss utilizes some of that tools mechanics. It's tried and true territory that I love. The voice acting and music are also on point with some pretty fun performances by Liam O'Brien, Mark Hamill and Phil Lamarr. All this adds up to one pretty epic adventure. Enjoy my playthrough.
