Deliverance (Amiga) Playthrough / When your greatest enemy joins forces with Satan himself !!
Deliverance (1992) by 21st Century Entertainment is a platform game in a Nordic-Christian-pagan atmosphere, and we must admit that it is definitely a game pleasing to the eye. In Deliverance, we play as Stormlord, whose greatest enemy Queen Bahd has kidnapped the only creatures that can threaten her. We are talking about fairies, and their powerful mystical powers. They have been placed in the castle of Satan, who is in alliance with the evil queen (who generally doesn't look like a queen at all, but something more masculine, but it's not for me to judge, since that's what it says on wikipedia :D). Stormlord's task will be to recapture those fairies, get out of hell and use the fairies' powers to annihilate evil incarnate...... from what it says this is his second attempt, as Bahd escaped the first time. The game, it must be said, for Amiga standards looks very nice indeed. Sprites are detailed and animations are quite smooth and realistic. The sound effects are generally ok but the lack of music is what hurts the most though. There is definitely a lack of some kind of familiar song in a martial climate, with beats in the background, etc. Overall it's not bad to play, but you can feel that Stormlord moves very sluggishly and his actions are a bit delayed. You can generally get used to it, but that would be about it as the game doesn't have any more mechanics...... all in all when you've passed the first level it's like you've already seen the vast majority of the game. At our disposal we have an infinite number of axes, which we throw or fight in close combat. Close-range attack is used here at most sporadically, so we'll rather mostly be throwing axes, apparently pulled out of our pants, since the main character only has boots, a helmet and just pants :D It's obvious that the game tried to gain interest with the help of controversy.... as there is occasional nudity and satanic symbols in the game. I personally don't mind, one or the other when it is used well. And did it succeed here ? Well not quite.... because it looks like only the first level is filled with these controversies. That is, a typical trick to arouse interest already with the first screenshots of the game in an early version. After that it is missing and the levels seem empty . Which is not to say that this makes them bad, but you can feel the lack of variety. The last level is the simplest, stripped-down shmup shooter. It is neither bad nor good but just bland and unattractive. Exactly like the game's culmination...... overall it looks like an unfinished project as it lacks any intro, and the culmination is basically one moving silent screen. Definitely after going through the whole game you feel unsatisfied here..... but well the game is apparently what it was supposed to be. It's average, while it could have been a timeless classic.
