The only reason I bought Ryse: Son of Rome during the recent Steam was to see how it looked (and ran) on my new computer. Crytek's brawler version of classical antiquity met with a decidedly lukewarm reception at the time of its Xbox One release, and as always with a product from these hard-working Teutonic engineers it's primarily the graphics which deserves mentioning. In technical terms Ryse doesn't seem to be quite the hardware-pushing monster that Crysis 3 is (which makes sense given that Son of Rome was primarily advertised as a showcase for the latest Xbox), but the overall impression still packs quite the punch. The environments are striking and richly detailed but still feel more a bit more grounded and realistic than in most games with pseudo-historical settings. Unfortunately a lot of the cutscenes aren't rendered in realtime, but at least the video compression is better than in a lot of lastgen PC ports.
