New Release Friday returns this week with Dogolrax gameplay and review and a surprisingly interesting time. I wasn’t expecting a whole lot from this game and definitely wasn’t expecting a very interesting episode, Dogolrax really made for some cool content I feel. The gameplay and review portion is honestly the least charming/alluring part of this episode, but of course is the point of New Release Friday. Additionally, the gameplay itself is pretty atrocious if I were to review this game based solely upon that attribute. Don’t let this deter you from Dogolrax though, it has many redeeming factors that actually make me give it a rather unsuspected review in the end. This game has to be the brainchild of either a very creative or very medicated/doped up individual… and it suits it quite well. We will talk a little more about why its style fits it so well in the coming paragraphs or if you are a normal person you will just watch the video… it is called Dogolrax gameplay and review after all… why the fuck would you come to a video with that title and read all the information in the description. Not that I am judging you or anything.

First off, what the fuck is NRF? New Release Friday is a series in which (hopefully) every week I will hop over to the “New Releases” section of Steam and pick-up a game to play for a few hours and give a first-thought review on. This series is an attempt to not only keep content fresh and relevant around the channel by covering current games in a concise and genuine fashion, but also to offer exposure to new games via a relaxed review format to inform potential, unsure buyers. Check out the playlist for more!

Kicking off our Dogolrax gameplay and review, we are going to take a look at the interfacing because it is the first thing I dealt with once in game. It gives you a choice between controller or keyboard when selecting an input device. Dogolrax even has a dedicated button to quickly switch between the two, but there is no reason for it when the controller just doesn’t work. Maybe I fucked up or something, but it wasn’t working for me. Also, trying to record this game was a shit storm. Dxtory wanted nothing to do with it. OBS bugged the fuck out when I was recording via game or display capture. But finally when I was about to just refund it, Fraps came through for me. Fraps involves a little more work and also has HUGE files, but luckily that wasn’t too big of a deal. OBS requires a lot of work too compared to Dxtory. After getting all my technical issues fixed, I could finally play the game. Pretty quickly, I was actually glad that I didn’t have to refund Dogolrax and could continue with my gameplay and review.

Art is immediately something that will stick out to you in this game. Not because the quality is particularly high caliber in Dogolrax, but because of the style and the subject matter. There are all sorts of details and interesting little bits that, quite often, have no bearing on the gameplay but are just there for flavor. The creatures that you can interact with are all immensely well-crafted and seem like they were tailored specifically to fit what they do. Also, there are anime girls… even when I think I found a game that will completely avoid putting anime girls in an episode of New Release Friday… they find a way to sneak in; the Dogolrax gameplay and review is no exception. Their art style is a little bit lower quality than some of the other games that have been featured, but this game isn’t built with them in mind and it excels far more in the areas that it focused on in comparison to here. Also, sort of in the same category, the environments of Dogolrax are GREAT for such a limited budget, low res game. I feel like a lot of that comes from the soundtrack though, because the soundtrack is killer in almost every level and every screen. From groovy shoot-em-up jams, ambient ballads, and nostalgic chiptunes. Dogolrax really hits every category with the music and made sure that each level had a very appropriate song to go along with it.

The gameplay is where Dogolrax suffers in this review. The controls are just plain sloppy and the game throws ridiculously hard timing and precision based jumps/maneuvers at you. They give you multiple paths in the game, which is awesome, but all seem to lead back to the same place, even if you select on that specifically says it will be harder or easier. Of course, since I was getting triggered I stuck to the easy routes. The game has a lot of neat mini games, but these also get gradually harder to the point that I kinda just stopped caring about them even if it is cool to mix stuff up. They seemed to ramp up the difficulty a bit too much in my opinion, but I still feel that it isn’t enough to make me not recommend Dogolrax. The game has so much charm in all the right places that I can actually justify the purchase, even if the gameplay was infuriating.
