DFFOO [JP][May Medal Challenge] Actually using Kain FR in 2023 because of Kain FR board
Would like to get Arciela BT, but my luck only went as far as netting me the FR. So the long awaited Kain FR board is the main focus this time.
As usual, medal challenge boss or I assume the raid boss coming up for Ignis BT should not be posing a challenge.
Kain rework and FR boards are actually nice. Returning after the introduction of FE50 and during the timeframe of having proximity releases of a bunch of range attackers is probably a timed and planned move on the devs part.
Also this run is from the solo "coop", as I have already finished the main one with Arciela for the multi-ticket challenge.
Boss: Heretic Scale Toad
(They are naturally weak to magic)
Force
0%: BRV gain after action
FA: (AOE melee BRV+HP, guaranteed hit)
- BRV gain to party afterwards
- Buff itself (and only itself) with BRV dmg reduction*, DEF+, SPD+
* Your BRV dmg becomes 1 normally
FT: 10T
- use FA++:
- x2 HP attack
- ignore BRV/HP mitigation and nullification
- still guaranteed hit
Weakness: (cancels FT)
- FA that does not have BRV and HP attack
There are no relevant HP threshold mechanics.
General Approach:
The boss causes little to no trouble barring two things: the BRV dmg reduction buffs and potential HP dmg that it can dish out. Mechanically speaking it is even less demanding than the ones for Quina FR/BT, as you don't need to periodically break them at all.
Other than racing against their FG, you can apply HP silence/paralysis to stop them from doing damage during their turns. Not giving them a turn also works, and the convenient way out is just to combine that with Raijin LDCA. That way you can even ignore the dmg from their FA. Remember that even though they ignore mitigation, Raijin LDCA causes the boss themselves to deal 100% less HP dmg. It happens on their end, so we don't need mitigation at all.
As for the BRV dmg reduction to 1, simply apply a dispel once it happens. Alternatively, abusing rainbow BRV dmg is also a way to assert dominance over their petty reduction.
That's pretty much it. They are not tanky at all. Just DPS lol.
Regarding Kain:
Kain actually has got quite a bump this time around.
The most glaring issues people had with him is his FR. It is the first one, so it is naturally quite underpowered compared to what we have had. Fortunately devs gave him quite a boost through FR board.
In terms of conditions:
- the range command/off-turn attack nets you an EXTRA 15% if it is done by Kain.
- break/attacking broken targets give you 50% straight up
- launches sitll give you 5%
So without any extra off-turn range shenanigans, you should be naturally getting around 70-80% with Kain poking in the air, depending if your current character is using a range attack / launching.
If you are using an echo that fulfil all conditions, it should reward you with around 100%+.
As I have said, having him reworked alongside multiple range character releases means you are more likely to be able to fit a team complementing his FR conditions.
Fujin is exceptionally useful with the guarantee party launches and "counterattacks".
Irvine giving 50% cap up and rainbow BRV dmg to range attackers is a very good companion as well.
Not to mention Laguna as well (regrettably still can't get his FR)
On top of this, his FR also comes with an extra 50% cap up when you break or hit a broken target.
HP dmg cap up
Kain still get some dump bumps, but most of his dmg increase comes from some unexpected cap ups from different places.
His LD buff actual has 20% innate cap up just because of its existence.
His BT also comes with an additional 20% self cap up (total 50%). There are also 20% from FE50.
As you can see in later portions of this run, his Lancet pokes are actually hitting well above 400K without Enna Kros. You can easily make him go through that 400K threshold now. With Enna, it should not be difficult at all to get to 500K.
Crystal Passive and HP dmg cap up
Also, on this topic, I would say Kain is one of the most suitable candidate to put something like A6 (HP poison but +20% cap up) on. If you send him into the sky, he will just enjoy the extra cap with his Lancet pokes without getting HP (or extra buff duration for another crystal passive) sapped until he comes back down.
The only thing I think can use even a bit more touch up is his Lancet pokes having 3 HP attacks. Though I can let that one slide when they have probably overdelivered on the cap part.
Quick word on Arciela:
I believe her extra HP dmg scaling is at 2% per debuff. So with a max of 8 debuffs, you can get up to 16%. which is quite good.
She also get a ton more normal skill uses, so stance change away if you must. Her descension HP attack is surprisingly decent (9 HP spread). I was expecting it to not get changed (well that is true for the Ascension counterpart).
