Did Baldur’s Gate 3 deserve to win Game of the Year?

I played every game that was nominated for the award, and, in my mind, Baldur’s Gate 3 really stands out as being different from its competitors.

Almost every one of these is a 3rd-person action game. The only exceptions are Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Baldur’s Gate 3 - they’re the two odd-balls.

And while I think it’s cool that a platformer like Mario Wonder was nominated, it’s not necessarily surprising. I mean, it’s Mario - literally the most recognizable IP in gaming.

To me, by far, the most unusual game on this list is Baldur’s Gate 3.

Essentially, it’s a game that transforms the role-playing system of Dungeons & Dragons from a tabletop game into a video game.

Honestly, it’s remarkable that a game like Baldur’s Gate 3 was able to break through and find its way into the hands and minds of the more general gaming audience.

It has elaborate RPG mechanics, intricate, unconventional storytelling, and every decision, from choosing allies to plotting paths, rests squarely in the player's hands.

It combines depth of gameplay with player freedom in a way that, arguably, no other game has.

And, in my mind, that's why it deserves the Game of the Year title.
