The church where Connor and Murphy go for mass is actually a Lutheran church instead of a Catholic one. None of the Catholic churches in the area would let them film in their sanctuaries because of their own objections to the subject of the film. Originally, Ewan McGregor was offered one of the lead roles by Troy Duffy, but while they were meeting in New York City, Duffy got drunk and got into an argument with Ewan over the death penalty. After that evening, Ewan decided to pass on the film, and Miramax put the film in turnaround.
