Darren Aronofsky wanted a certain scene in the film so badly that he secured the rights to another film. The overhead shot of Marion in the bathtub where she screams underwater is almost an exact copy of a similar scene in a Japanese animated thriller called Perfect Blue. Darren secured the rights to a live-action version just so he could include the scene. Originally, Marion Silver was going to be played by Neve Campbell instead, but once she found out that the role required on-screen nudity, she declined.
