When Mathilda checks Leon and herself in at the desk, she does so under the name “MacGuffin”. This is actually a movie term that was coined by Alfred Hitchcock that stood for a device that interests most characters but mainly the antagonist. While it isn’t the subject of the film, it can be considered a reference to a classic state of film. Originally, the film had more awkward sexual tension scenes between Mathilda and Leon, but they were cut for the American release. They were reintegrated into the film for the “International Cut”.
