In forty years working in national radio and with an audience at one time of eleven million listeners, Simon Bates has never broadcast from anywhere quite like it. On the brink of turning sixty-four he's just arrived in Helmand to present a week of his breakfast show on Smooth Radio from BFBS in Camp Bastion. Before starting on Monday he will spend a few days travelling around Helmand recording interviews for a programme that still features his hallmark "Our Tune" in which listeners nominate a piece of music that highlights a turning point in their lives.
