Doom Classic video #48
(4.7.1994)
(Links, secrets and more information at the bottom of the description)
Hello. More PC Zone lvl finalist maps to play through. This time it's 'Deus', made by Brian Mckevitt.
This one has probably taken its start from the 1st episode's start and few other rooms, and then running its own course into its final form, a base of sort. It's not riddled with issues, but there's at least one possible way to get stuck at Yellow Key pickup spot.
(Sometimes it's funny to compare each occuring moment to my commentary, like with the step at the key. Choice of words matter quite a bit!)
• Visually, it's not quite as solid as original areas of Doom 1 episode (the rooms that you recognize), but it's not bad either. It feels thought out, has detailing with lighting and also otherwise, when you stop to look around, and you also see some breaking of monotonous texturing in places.
As an afterthought, it's actually rather solid for its time.
• Difficulty is quite easy, despite some of the trap elements of the level. Most of them are weak enemies, so they're quickly taken down. It does display a good variety of encounters mixing passive placement, monster closets and alerted enemies even, if it's easy for the map.
• Health & armor should last till the end. Decent balance here, not giving a ton of health, but should be enough to last.
• Ammunition is also plentiful enough to last. You get RL and Plasma, but not heaps of ammo for those, as you don't really need them.
A bit of a surprise the lack of secrets in this one. You get one and you easily come across it, so it feels like a half-secret.
• And the only real bad thing in this map is the aforementioned possibility of getting stuck on Yellow Key, if you stay inside the small ring, when the exit-sector goes back up.
So yeah. A decent contender out of the maps so far. Probably was ranked higher among the finalists, if I had to guess. Give it a whirl!
