Doom Classic video #47
(4.7.1994)
(Links, secrets and more information at the bottom of the description)
NOTE: Also noticed some changes in the time link section, making the list appear like a mess instead of what I normally see, when preparing descriptions. So, I'm trying out some changes here...
Hello. Another PC Zone lvl finalist map here, 'Daves2nd' by Dave Cameron.
A map with a number of issues and/or oversights, which could've been rather easily spotted with some right sort of testing. Still, it plays well enough and has something going for it as well.
I ended up spending extra minutes of looking for missed bonuses, a switch and double-checking a missing zombieman's location.
(Oh, and I tried a quick look for Dave's 1st map, but didn't get a result)
• So, visually it's mostly rather unimpressing and scale is sometimes going off in places, but it wasn't all uninteresting: I found the flesh room with Yellow Key was actually surprisingly neat. It was a bit cramped with the bodies, tho!
• Difficulty is mostly on the very easy side, apart from at least two encounters. I feel like there was more thought put into enemy placement in general, at least in certain places.
Few better traps around... but it could've had more enemies placed around the bigger areas.
• Health and armor shouldn't be much of a problem on vanilla. Hard Doom might punish a bit more with a trap or two. (I got a pretty aggressive Bruiser, which got me quite good there)
• Ammunition is more on the plentiful side, but not by that much
And then some of the stuff that could've had more attention:
• 2 unmarked secrets at least
• Usually not able to get 100% kills due to zombieman getting stuck inside monster room. Wall with tele-line gets turned into a door by a monster, that then closes. It can't be opened from the wrong side, so it gets stuck there. 'Idclip' to open door and letting the poor man free via teleport!
• You can also miss trigger line to open
• Window (towards Blue Key) doesn't block the player.
• Missing texture at stairs leading towards exit
• Two raising platforms that block access
Platform to Red Key & small Red Door can be activated only once. You miss Red Key and you''ll be stuck from that point onwards. (Killing imp next to the key can often hide the key behind the corpse)
Just beyond Red Door, missing the ride up to the 'Backpack' will leave it unobtainable. (fortunately there's another in the level!)
But despite the list of issues, it was still worth of a play.
Not too bad, but just could've been improved upon further.
