Doom 64 Map 28 Ultra Hard (Doom 64 Remaster w/ Morph Sound 64 1.1 beta)
Inspired by the Reading Gamebow group's Team Reading, I am replaying Doom 64 on ultra hard settings. What is ultra hard you may ask? Further inspired by Decino's Doom 64 play through, it is "Watch Me Die" difficulty with pistol starts, fast monsters, and no mid-level loading. This map, known as "The Absolution," is the final battle with the mother demon. Believe it or not, I had zero deaths here! The general strategy is to save all of the cell ammo until the mother demon appears so you can BFG or laser her. At the start of the level, while you have the invulnerability active, its best to take out as many pain elementals as possible with rockets. The rocket explosions cause nice splash damage to other enemies too. Then when the invulnerability wears off, either keep on circle strafing as I did or find a safe spot behind one of the spawners. I keep the chaingun out as a few more pain elementals will spawn and create clouds off lost souls. Then I pretty much ignore the other enemies and focus my chaingun attacks on the remaining pain elementals and keeping the lost souls off me. After the pain elementals are done, most of the other enemies will be gone too due to friendly fire so they are simpler to pick off. When the mother demon appears there are two strategies. First strategy is to keep as much distance as you can and laser her while circle strafing, then come in close for a BFG attack or a power up. The second strategy is what I did and I call it "death blinked." Here you get right up to her chamber, let off a few BFG blasts as she reveals herself, then get right in her face and keep BFG blasting her. Hopefully you can pick up the soul sphere while doing this. Keeping so close ensures the BFG will do the most damage. It is like staring death in the eyes and, when it blinks, death itself perishes, hence "death blinked." I had a blast with this challenge! I will likely play some more of the bonus maps and perhaps next year I will do a 100% run on the N64 hardware.
