Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a game developed by Larian Studios, who is the developer behind the much anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3. This video is a story about how Divinity: Original Sin 2 introduced me to gaming during a dark period of my life, and more or less saved me from depression. I've been thinking for a while now about how to do justice to my love of D:OS2 and the CRPG genre more generally, and instead of writing a review or analysis or guide of some kind, I decided that the best way to represent what the game and genre both mean to me is to tell a story about how D:OS2 shaped the last two years of my life by getting me into the gaming hobby. So I guess you could call this my gamer origin story, and the origin of this channel.

There is something special about the combined effect of the D:OS2's progression and combat systems, its lore, storytelling style, and overall imaginative complexity that was powerful enough to give me a reason to wake up another day and enjoy life at a time when I was otherwise completely hopeless; and this video describes how that happened. The climax of the story, believe it or not, takes place one night as I was falling asleep, as my mind started wandering and I began to entertain some fun ideas about how to respec one of my characters (Lohse) ... and then I suddenly noticed something about the effect that the game was having on my patterns of thought and overall happiness. It was an important moment in my life; and you'll have to watch to find out exactly what happened! :)

Some of the other themes that I touch on include: how Divinity: Original Sin 2 manages to stay accessible even while being extremely difficult; how the online community, build guides, and cheese strategies all enhance its gameplay and contribute to accessibility; how I discovered the gaming hobby; the relationship between hobbies and escapism; and how I use the gaming hobby and this YouTube channel as part of a larger project to build a happy life for myself.
