Doomsday hunters is a new roguelike twin stick shooter game that was released on July 20, 2023. It was developed and published by Moregames. I am playing this on Steam, where the reviews are very positive, with about a 90% positive score.

The first word that comes to my mind is strange lol. Aliens, zombies, and even Dracula show up in this post-apocalyptic game. There are many different enemy types, which keeps new runs fresh, and force you to learn patterns and ways to handle the situations you find yourself in every time you go to a new island.

There are a TON of things to unlock, which you do by leveling up. These unlockables come in the form of new weapons, new abilities, new items, and new enemy types. As you unlock more content, the game gets longer and more difficult. You even unlock new hazards, adding another layer of difficulty on your runs.

There are also unlockable characters, each with their own requirements to unlock (some from leveling up, and some from doing certain things in-game). Each character has their own set of pros and cons. As of writing this, I have unlocked 4 new characters. Tezla was the character I used for my second run, whom has a higher pool of mana than health.

Before each run, you are able to pick a class for your character. A few I have seen are Thief, that allows you to start with 15 gold and lets you choose a tier 1 relic, an Evolver class, that gives you -50% max HP and Mana, but also gives you +10 Max HP and Mana for finishing a level, and a few other classes. I haven't done enough runs yet to see if these cycle randomly, or if each character has a set choice of classes to choose from.

There are Modifiers you can toggle on and off that also affect the gameplay. These range from boosting your starting HP, regenerating energy, giving you an extra life, and much more. These will definitely be helpful as you try to get accustomed to the game and its mechanics. Speaking of getting use to the game, there is a tutorial you can play through that will teach you the ropes.

In-game, the controls feel pretty tight. I didn't have any problems controlling my character, but the jump mechanic is a bit weird to get used to. I do wish that you could dash more frequently, though. There were a lot of times in my runs where it felt like I couldn't defend myself because I had to wait for my dash to cooldown. Not a deal breaker for me, but I feel like on the harder difficulties this may result in some cheap deaths.

There is a huge variety of weapons, abilities and items you can find on each run. Weapons also can have mods equipped on them, giving some customization to your weaponry.

There are some pretty funny references in the game. I had a conversation with one guy, and he mentioned the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I also found a gun that reminded me of the BFG from Doom. This game definitely gave me some nostalgic vibes of other games I played as a kid/teenager.

Overall, the game has been pretty fun so far! There is a lot to do, and at first all the mechanics can feel a bit overwhelming before you get used to them, but with some time, it should start feeling more natural.
