Kick. Punch. It's all in the mind. Actually, it's all in the ELBOW! This week I played another game I had as a kid, but was never able to beat: Double Dragon. You play as 'Billy Lee' and your goal is to save your (presumably) girlfriend, who was captured by a group of gang members and rival fighters. To reach her, you must get through four missions, gaining experience and new moves along the way.

Due to limitations of the NES at the time, the game can only generate two enemies on the screen at the same time. And hilariously, as your fighting the first baddie, the second will often politely stand still and wait until it's their turn for a bruising. When I saw this game was roughly 20-30 mins long, I couldn't pass up the chance to finally use my adult gaming skills and beat it. But... (I know I say this a lot) this game is HARD!

I don't know how many times I practiced the last level, but I think I only beat it without dying once. And when it came time to record, I died while fighting the last boss (your clone). Luckily, if you die while fighting the last boss, you start again at the last boss. If you die anytime before that, you have to do the last sequence in full! The last level really sharpened my skills though. If I had to play this game again, it would probably go a bit easier for me.

Anyway, something I'd like to point out is that each move earns a different amount of experience. You can level-up to level 7, learning different moves along the way. Try to level up to level 6 as soon as possible. That's when you learn the 'elbow', possibly the best move in the game.

Level 1
Punch - 20 EXP / Kick - 15 EXP / Head-butt - 12 EXP / Jump - 0 EXP
Level 2
Uppercut - 10 EXP / Roundhouse - 10 EXP
Level 3
Jump Kick - 12 EXP (also very useful)
Level 4
Grab - 0 EXP / Knee - 0 EXP / Throw - 0 EXP
Level 5
Straddle - 0 EXP / Face Punch - 0 EXP
Level 6
Elbow - 3 EXP
Level 7
Spinning Roundhouse - 0 EXP (sound cooler than it actually is)
