Popeye - (NES) - Full Playthrough
5Well blow me down! This game is... uh, well it's certainly a game. 'Popeye' for NES came out on June 6th, 1986. It's a port of the classic 'Popeye' arcade game from 1982. It was coincidentally released for NES at the same time as the four 'Donkey Kong' games. The 'Popeye' comic/cartoon was actually one of the inspirations for 'Donkey Kong' and originally, the Popeye characters were supposed to appear in the game. However, Nintendo did not have the license to use the characters at the time.
'Popeye' is a platformer game with three levels. You play as the titular 'Popeye the Sailorman', who must collect a certain number of items dropped by his beloved 'Olive Oyl', while avoiding his principle antagonist, Brutus and other dangers. Each level has a can of spinach, which will give Popeye invincibility to knock out Brutus momentarily.
This is a playthrough of the three levels in 'Game A'. After the third level, it loops back to the first with a higher difficulty. 'Game B' begins at a higher difficulty right from the start. Under the harder difficulty, the 'Sea Hag' also throws skulls at Popeye, it's... uh, well it's genuinely terrifying actually.
