The Simpsons: Bart vs. The Space Mutants - (NES) - Full Playthrough
6'Bart vs. The Space Mutants' is a platform video game and actually the second game based on 'The Simpsons' (the first being the arcade game maybe? It was released a month earlier in March). It was released in April in 1991 for NES by Acclaim Entertainment. Surprisingly, just like the last game I played (StarTropics), it was never released in Japan.
In the game, the player controls Bart through five levels, as he tries to stop the alien 'Space Mutants' from taking over the world. Due to the timing of its release, the game leans heavily on references and characters from the first season of the show, many of which did not become prominent parts of the series in later seasons.
Ay, caramba! This game is hard! This is another game I had as a child that I never was able to beat. I think maybe one time, ONE TIME, maybe I got to the museum level, but it might be a false memory. If I did, I certainly didn't beat it.
What makes this game hard? Well first off, the levels are looooong. Luckily there are checkpoints, so if you die, you don't start from scratch. I really tried my hardest to do the whole game without dying. BUT for some annoying reason... when I started the fourth level it gave me only 300 seconds, even though it's the LONGEST (and arguably hardest) level of the whole game. So I inevitably died by running out the clock and then time gets reset to 900 seconds.
The controls are also another factor in the difficulty. The controls can 'Eat my shorts'. In order to run, you have to hold 'A' and some jumps are very difficult to do if you're not holding 'B' while jumping. Some parts of the game give you the smallest of footholds to jump onto. The T-Rex mid-boss from the museum level for example... I must've died a hundred times, before I was able to successfully jump on the correct spot on its head three-times.
Throughout the game, you basically have 2HP. There's plenty of items found throughout the levels: extra lives, invincibility-granting Jebediah Springfield heads and a large amount of seemingly pointless coins (you literally can't use them for anything after the third level). However, there's absolutely no way to regain health. So I found myself, a couple times throughout the game, just a step away from Bart's death.
Cool man! All in all, I'm glad I pushed through and beat this one. Though, the lack of a final boss and the quick ending made the victory feel a bit underwhelming and hollow.
