StarTropics - (NES) - Full Playthrough
I'm back! I took a month off after several months of hardcore NES gaming, so I decided to come back with a good one, StarTropics! Surprisingly, island-themed action-adventure game was never released or intended to be released in Japan. It was released in North America in late 1990, along with Europe nearly a year later.
I have fond memories of this game. It was prominently featured on the cover of Nintendo Power volume 21. Their spread of StarTropics was practically a full strategy guide. It was the first game I ever rented from Blockbuster, but I had never beat it. There's a steady uptick in difficulty throughout the game and unfortunately 90's me just couldn't beat it.
The story of the game follows Mike Jones as he travels to visit his uncle, an archaeologist by the name of Dr. Steven Jones, at his laboratory on the fictional C-Island in the South Seas. When Mike arrives at Dr. Jones's home in the tropical village of Coralcola, he finds that his uncle has gone missing. The chief of Coralcola gives Mike a special yo-yo to defend himself, and Dr. Jones's robot Nav-Com permits Mike to use his uncle's submarine to search for him. On a nearby island, Mike finds a bottle with a message from Dr. Jones, stating that he has been abducted by extraterrestrials. Traveling to many of the isles of the South Seas, Mike encounters monsters, labyrinths, quirky characters, and intelligent animals, including a talking parrot and a mother dolphin looking for her son, all in the search for his lost uncle.
This game even came with a letter that you needed to pour liquid on, in order to reveal a hidden code to progress in the game. It had everything...
