Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara - Tower Of Doom - Master Playthrough
The Chronicles of Mystara Beat 'Em Ups are definitely an interesting pair. Combine solid beat 'em up mechanics with RPG elements, a solid story and D&D setting as well as multiple paths and you have an overall good game.
I pick the Elf for this playthrough, because of her magic based attacks, and because you kind of guessed I would.
The enemies are pretty generic D&D monsters, but the bosses all work pretty well. The Red Dragon (optional) boss is definitely the most noteworthy.
My only gripe with this game is the difficulty of it, I know I picked Master difficulty, but I'm not complaining about how much the enemies damaged me, rather, how hard it was to damage enemies with anything but magic. There's no blocking with Shields, and it seems to be hard to land a blow on most opponents, other than the basic Kobolds. The other issue I have is that the RPG elements feel kind of lost. Other than being told your HP has increased as your level does, and having more spells at your disposal, it doesn't feel necessary.
Still, it's fun overall, and I think the sequel addresses at least one of the issues, and improves the game overall.
It's just a shame I died A LOT of times in both games because of the opponent's damage, which I speculate is due to the game being from an Arcade machine.
