Eternal Legend: EnD (エターナルレジェンド 永遠の伝説) is a Japan-only RPG for the Game Gear by JAM (Japan Art Media) and one of the first RPGs for the handheld. Strangely enough, despite the incredible obscurity of this title, someone was compelled to make a rom hack of this game called "Pokemon Legend", where the main character's sprite is changed into Pikachu and the man who takes you to the Inn is changed into Ash (as if it were a Pokemon Center or something). Humourously, while there are a few other very minor differences, all the text is generally the same and Pikachu is still equipped with a Dagger, Bandana and Cotton Robe.

Enough about that though. Eternal Legend is your standard old JRPG with high encounter rates and lots of travelling and grinding, but it also has a surprising amount of depth for an old RPG and even some optional quests. The game looks pretty nice for the time and the game is certainly ambitious. Being helped by the same company who handled the Aretha series, this games' basic setup is much the same as the early Game Boy Aretha titles, though the integral portions are much more traditional than Aretha, which also makes the game easier to pick up and understand. One of the few peculiar elements is that there is more "randomness" then your average RPG, you can take an enemy's weapon with a whip, and you can summon monsters with items who act independently (whereas the early Game Boy Aretha game allowed you to capture monsters with fireballs).

Level-Ups have a huge threshold in stat variances, enemy attacks have a wide damage margin, and even the experience and money enemies give has a random range set. This means you can fight an enemy one time and get one experience point but fight them again and get three or five experience points. You're not gauranteed early on to get more experience by fighting more enemies!

Make sure to talk to the girl in the center of town to buy cheap healing items and you should be ready to explore once you're around level four or five. This video shows snippets of the starting town and Alvin working his way to the Jade Mountain Cave. Ordinarily, you can get a party member before entering this cave, but we didn't want to edit the process of getting Birth and the Mayor's glasses. Enjoy.
