The Broken Hills Mine dates back to the 1920s. A small town flourished at the site for a few years, but nothing of the town remains today. A headframe sits over a 600-foot deep vertical shaft, and many smaller shafts and prospects are in the ground and low hills around it. The hoist-house for the main shaft is also standing. Perhaps the most unique thing is that an old, poor prospector named Matt Costello is buried near the site. He spent his life trying to find gold and become rich. Once he did strike it rich, he sold his mining claim for a nice sum of money only to die unexpectedly a day or two later before he was able to spend any of newfound wealth.
