While driving home from Las Vegas, I made a quick stop to check out one of several entrances to the Kokoweef Mine on Kokoweef Mountain. A few return visits will be necessary so that all the openings on the mountain can be checked out. There is supposedly a large cave under the mountain with an underground river which is full of black sand flecked with gold. An early prospector by the name of Earl Dorr reported to have found this huge cavern and its large underground river. Kokoweef Caverns was a tourist destination at one point, but that is no longer the case. The caverns themselves have now partly become the stuff of legends, but they almost certainly do exist. The problem is trying to find the entrances. An active mine still operates on the western side of Kokoweef Mountain where there are several portals; I explored the eastern side of the mountain and its lone portal.
