The abandoned Eagle Mine, along with several other mines across Nevada, was surveyed and mapped in the 1960s by authorities for consideration as a fallout shelter in the event of a nuclear attack. We hiked out to the mine and explored its extensive interior. We found ourselves in a side tunnel that had absolutely no footprints in it. We realized that this remote mine isn't as visited as often as we had thought. This side tunnel led us to the bottom of a narrow, open stope. Other interesting things we found and filmed inside the mine include two 200-foot deep winzesa nd a memorial plaque for a fallen miner. An elaborate wooden trestle, chute, and ore bin sit outside the main portal of the Eagle Mine. We also explored another nearby, short adit.
