Ruka enters what appears to be her old home as she follows the spirit of Soya Yomotsuki, her father. In her home, she uncovers more secrets about the Masks and the Rite of Descent and her family deep rooted connection to them. The Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is supposed to quite literally empty the mind of the dancer who serves as the Vessel. Yet, when Soya's ancestor made it several generations prior, the mask broke causing the Day of Tranquility. The disaster that befell Rougetsu causing many of the islanders to vanish or die. Soya had come to the conclusion that the Rite of Descent failed because his ancestor's mask was imperfect, which resulted in certain parts of the mind being activated which is normally forbidden. His obsession with perfecting the mask came across good fortune when he learnt the Haibara family were studying masks and its effects to cure Moonlight Syndrome. Fully confident that the Haibara father and son would accept his participation he immersed himself into making the mask. Yo Haibara and his father Shigeto Haibara watched Sakuya Haibara don the Soya's Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, with his own daughter Ruka Minazuki wearing the mask of an Organ along with four other girls. As this secret Rite of Descent took place, the publicly viewed Rougetsu Kagura dance would simultaneously take place with the infirmary nurse Tsubaki Tono being the Vessel for the festival. But as the lunar eclipse proceeded, Sakuya lost her mind as the Mask broke. Simultaneously Tsubaki collapsed and died during the Kagura, even showing signs of blossoming. The girls serving as the Organs in the Rite of Descent lost all of their memories.
It was clear that the Rite of Descent and the Mask required those who were enthralled by the Moon, and the Mask is supposed to completely empty one's mind and be in a state similar to death. Success would have meant the Souls of the dead would be transported to the other world together with the soul of the Vessel, the latter of which would return fully restored to its original state. Sakuya would have been cured of her Moonlight Syndrome along with the other children, completely freed from the burden of the souls inhabiting her, Ruka and Misaki. But none of this happened, and the worst disaster occurred and continued for years.
Yo Haibara and Shigeto Haibara despaired at their daughter who was now all but lost to them, and now in danger of blossoming. But Soya Yomotsuki still obsessed with making the perfect Mask, believing it to be his destiny. And it was this obsessive spirit that Ruka had to finally confront....
