A (mostly) indoors map, but nobody gets to dismount in Shadow Dragon, Shiida maintaining her preferred Dracoknight class, which there is so little incentive to change for anything else in this game. Jagen does end up a Paladin for this map only, as the higher resistance enables him to avoid being OHKO'd by the mages that he and Cain have to take out. It's a good thing they're so easy to double with Bolganone weighing them down. Mages are the most dangerous units to face as they have about as much attack as everybody else but target a stat that nobody ever grows. Even our sturdiest unit on the physical side can't recover from a tome nuke.
The treasure is extremely abundant in this map, both in chests and when defeating enemies, so Julian is brought along. There are two Master Seals, which are going to Abel and Barst sometime soon, some money, an Arms Scroll that nobody particularly wants right now when you think about it, but the most vital item here is the Boots by far. Giving Marth extra 2 move in the maps to come has an immediate effect on shaving off turns, especially in maps where longer distances need to traversed.
Sedgar sees an unconventional reclass to Warrior here, his trusted sidekick Wolf sitting out due to deployment slot limitations. As a Warrior, he won't critblick enemies we want to milk for weapon experience, countering archers through the wall for around 6 wexp per turn. Not only does this unlock D axes as a Hero but we can get C axes like Poleaxe, Hammer and Killer Axe as Berserker/Warrior very soon, too. Reclassing out of General sees Sedgar become only as bulky as our other bulky units, so he'll need Mend healing from Lena virtually every turn to stay alive. This is still really good bulk relatively speaking, when you see Abel being cleanly 2HKO'd by the nearest armoured knight, and Abel has pretty good HP/defence.
The enemy density is low, but there's always something to do, so you never get bored (something typical to Shadow Dragon, I find). Promoted enemies, besides the boss, include a paladin we want to kill for his Master Seal, a Sniper dropping a Silver Bow that hasn't been used up by General Sedgar facetanking him for six rounds of combat (cough chapter 10 silver bow cough) and a non-aggressive General Barst goes to town on with Hammertime to let Julian nab the Dragonpike chest - by now, we know all too well how difficult dealing with Manaketes is.
Jake has another field day map in this one, sniping enemies for experience with Arrowspate. Strength is the main stat Jake cares about (skl and lck are appreciated too) and ideally we want to cap it. This is why Jake took our first Energy Drop in the previous map.
The limited deployment slots are to do with Midia and her army being held prisoners in this map. The next map is a gaiden chapter, which is why we killed off Ogma, Roger and Rickard before this. However, five more recruits is excessive, and Macellan, Dolph and Tomas need to be sacrificed here, which couldn't have been easier to accomplish with enemies one-rounding them.
The new units, Midia and Boah, are mediocre. Midia has poorer stats and weapon ranks than Jagen, but can help out by being an extra Dracoknight. She can wield the Ridersbane, but enemy cavaliers generally double her. Boah is a promoted healer who can use staves like Physic and Barrier, but a lot of the time Lena suffices for healing chores, often healing just to self-improve. Boah is comparable to Wendell in that he has high absolute base speed, so he can be seen as a superior dracoknight to Midia in many situations. With Palla and Catria bringing us additional dracoknight slots soon, we don't mind having more dracos in the army for their movement and flight.
We end the chapter with exactly 15 units in the army, unlocking the second gaiden map.
