Fears (Amiga AGA) - A PlayGuide and Review - by LemonAmiga.com
Fears was yet another Doom inspired late release on the Amiga, this time developed by a bunch or European Demo coders, calling themselves Bomb Software, and released by Manyk in 1995. Unlike Lollypop, this did get a wide distribution, thanks to promotion and reviews in magazines. So lets see how it stacks up.

As we've now covered quite a lot of AAA games on the Amiga, it's time to get back to what I used to consider a B game. One that almost made it, but perhaps due to a lack of interest in me having to play using the keyboard, or perhaps I'd left the Amiga scene by then, I never really played this before. At some point in December 2022, looking to see if it would be a good game to review. I could remap all of the controls to a PS2 gamepad, and finally play it with 040, so this got a fair try. With all of those elements in place, I took a practice go. Things did not go well. I fell down into the lava on the second level at least 3 or 4 times, until all my lives were gone. Not sure if the video footage was recorded on the same date, but somehow I discovered the K key, and from there I tried again. I knew the first and second level maps by the time I started the recorder, 365 days ago from the time of writing this, on the 15th of December 2022.
Danscore:
Doom clones on the Amiga have often seemed quite difficult to love, and can seem janky. At least this one is full screen with nice big info displays, and not in a tiny postage stamp window with a few colour bars and blocks for health. I'm fairly certain the 'K' to restart option was only in my WHDLoad install and probably was never an option in the game, but it really opened up this experience for me, so that I could enjoy the experience. The hit detection is often literally hit or miss, with enemies hitting you even if the projectile must pass through a solid wall to do it. But it can work both ways sometimes. Frame rate is ok, especially for a full screen game, and I'm fairly sure there is an option to make the screen smaller somehow with the F keys. Level layout is fairly good, and fairly linear, which does give a feeling of progressing; with familiar landmarks and pits of death instead of boring old square corridors; so it's hard to get lost. With all of the boxes ticked, this should have been a sure winner, but for me there is just something not quite there compared to AB3D and Gloom, Duke Nukem 3D and Breathless etc. So I was sceptical. If the 'Respawn' option was in the original game, I'd give this 8, but if it wasn't, then I can only give it 7.5; because someone had to hack the game to make it fun and playable.
