After several dozen attempts, I finally managed to beat the boss. Really, with Vanish on, he would be quite easy and in the past I did do a challenge where any other approach to the battle would have been unreasonable. This time I wanted to attempt something harder.

If you remember what our party was like, everybody is unequipped except for Gau who was wearing just a helmet. Nobody had learnt any magic except for Edgar who knew the spells of the 4 Zozo Espers already (except for the ones that are learnt really slowly like Thundara and Float).

The strategy I had earlier seemed like a failure. Often the party would be at a disadvantage and unlikely to win very obviously at the very start of the battle, there were many early resets, and just as many 10-minute long struggles of the party being eventually overpowered.

I thought I found where my problems came from. The battle is obviously harder when all three parts of the boss are alive and their already powerful attacks stack so quickly. The two blades don't have much HP and can be easily eliminated, but Gau, the party's best attacker, may not always use his powerful attack, or may attack physically causing silly damage.

For this video, I tried out another strategy: made Edgar the attacker instead of Gau for the beginning of the battle. With 3 enemies and 2 being very vulnerable to attacks and dying quickly, offence is the best form of defence. The blades are vulnerable to the instant death effect, which is a good hint Chainsaw should be used in this battle. You probably know this, but Chainsaw is obtained in Zozo by doing the clock puzzle and is a stronger tool than Drill but has a chance of instantly killing its target instead of doing damage. For enemies immune to instant death, Drill is less risky to use but in this case Chainsaw is just perfect for attacking.

What's more is that this leaves Gau available for healing together with Locke and we need so much healing that we might stop attacking altogether - too bad that will mean eventual game over.

As soon as Edgar succeeds in killing the blades, Gau should start raging something immediately. When the blades regenerate, Edgar should be ready to Chainsaw them quickly again.

This worked a lot more effectively than the previous strategy where Edgar was a healer (though I did have to heal here as well).

It seems that this attempt was also successful because Giga Volt hit at the right time and the right parts, not to mention all the times the boss's attacks missed or did 0 damage (because he had suffered no damage and thus couldn't drain any health back).
