FF6 LLDF Part VI: Cranes
If you want to read the rules of the challenge, go here:

To save you the time from reading all that though, this is a low level battle against the traditionally difficult boss, Cranes, where nobody is wearing any equipment besides Gau who has a helmet on, and nobody has learnt any magic besides Edgar. This is because among the 'functions' or privileges only one character in the challenge can get - Esper, Weapon, Armour, Shield, Helmet, Relic1, Relic2 - Edgar got Magic, Gau got a Helmet and Locke got nothing at all.
Setzer joins the party here and he gets auto-equipped, meaning he has an advantage over anybody else in that he can *gasp* survive a physical, non-critical attack from the crane he is facing.
But aside from that, things are pretty bad. The GBA version has one advantage in this battle, the high Evasion of Gau and Locke which can prevent the attacks and physical techniques here. Locke and Edgar have 2 or so MEvade in this case, and Gau has 18 MEvade. This means they can't evade much, and whatever does hit them will usually be deadly.
The cranes sometimes target each other with spells and as soon as they've been hit by their own spells three times, a magical attack that is unblockable follows. Game over.
However, we are much more likely to see the game over screen if they don't target each other at all and concentrate on US instead. Almost everything here is an instant KO, and a 2nd level elemental spell, be it Bolt 2 or Fire 2, vanquishes our whole party.
Rule 1 is that Gau should never die and should Rage Anguiform, because both the cranes are weak to water. 3 Aqua Breath attacks eliminate a Crane. It is wise to have Edgar help out by casting Slow on the bosses and Drilling, but most of the time we'll need to do some reviving.
Difficult battle as expected, many attempts were required.
