FFIX Excalibur II Perfect Game (Version X) - 45 The Pandemonium Battles (Path C)
This is the final obstacle of the Excalibur II Perfect Game. Once you get through this, there is nothing left to stand in your way!!! Let's do it!
Strategy for Amdusias:
This is the easiest of the three battles, as there really isn't a way to lose if you pay attention. DON'T DO ANYTHING until Freya appears. With the Holy Lance enhanced with the Mythril Helm, she can take out Amdusias by herself, so just one attack will bring in Amarant. Wait for Amdusias to act and as long as Freya is untouched, you win. Just have Zidane and Amarant take themselves out before Freya deals the final blow.
Strategy for Abadon:
Now things start to get tricky. Quina needs to take the experience here, so Limit Glove will be the attack that wins the battle. The best opener from Abadon is High Wind as Quina can survive it. Steiner will be knocked out so have Quina revive him. It is important to have as many targets available for Abadon's attacks to increase the chances of Quina not being targeted. For Abadon's second turn, Quina being knocked out is the best option, as Limit Glove will be ready to go once Zidane joins the fray. (Abadon cannot be killed until he shows up) Once Zidane appears, Quina simply cannot die, but Abadon has to take 927 damage before Limit Glove is cast. This can be done either by Steiner or Zidane attacking before Abadon's 3rd turn if their ATB fills quick enough, or best of all, Abadon foolishly uses Thundaga against Zidane and the attack gets reflected back at twice the damage! Just have Zidane and Steiner attack themselves and Quina cast Limit Glove for the win!
Strategy for Shell Dragon:
This is it! There have been lots of preparation that began at the Iifa Tree and it all comes together here, but the battle can end before it begins if Shell Dragon uses Charge before Zidane can trigger Dagger's appearance. To my knowledge, Shell Dragon cannot use Smash until Dagger shows up so you have a 50-50 shot at getting the battle under way. To review, these are the ingredients of the new Shell Dragon strategy:
Zidane with 22 or 23 strength and his trance gauge one hit from full, No Potions, a decent supply of Hi-Potion and 3 Dead Pepper in the inventory.
To get Dagger to appear, Zidane must enter critical HP. The Dead Pepper works similarly to the gems, but they deal damage instead of restoring HP. For each Dead Pepper you have when one is used, it will deal 30 HP in damage (105-90=15) putting Zidane into critical and triggering the final phase.
A very important thing to know at all times, Dagger only has 584 HP, and she CAN die from a Charge attack if it is too strong and if she is not defending, however if she IS defending, she is invincible as long as you do not run out of Hi-Potions. Bottom line, if Dagger does not need to act, put her in defense mode!!!
Now that Dagger is here, Zidane needs to enter trance ASAP, and the only way to do that is for him to be hit with Smash. If the trance gauge is filled up enough, he should trance in one hit! Once this happens, use Zidane's Meo Twister and have Dagger use an Elixir on Zidane to restore his MP so that he can use it again next turn.
With 22 Strength, Meo Twister will deal either 5688, 5372, or 5214 damage. Shell Dragon has 10,921 HP. If you do the math, a 5688 and a 5214 return on two Meo Twisters equals 10902, just 19 HP from death, setting up Dagger for one attack to win! However, if you get 5688 on the first Meo Twister, then Dagger (NOT Zidane because he is in trance) will have to use a Lapis Lazuli on Shell Dragon to raise its HP to 5433, so that either 5372 or 5214 damage will put it within a few attacks from Dagger for the win. Just make sure Zidane is knocked out before the moment of truth!!!
With 23 Strength, its a little tougher but possible! Meo Twister will still deal the 5688 and 5372 outputs, but 5214 is no longer in play. But now 5846 and 6162 are now possible outputs for Meo Twister, so in this case a 5688 first, then a Lapis Lazuli thrown on Shell Dragon, then a 5372 return for the 2nd Meo Twister will set Dagger up for the killing blow!
I didn't expect to have the perfect battle, and you shouldn't either. Success is the #1 priority over time. This is the only successful run I have and I will not go through all of this hell just to shave of 30 seconds to a minute of time, NO WAY!
Don't celebrate just yet, there is still work to be done before the save!
Once everyone is reunited, remove Dagger and Quina's equipment and give Quina the Running Shoes and activate Auto-Haste if you plan on using the NIght strategy for Nova Dragon. Revive Zidane, head back two screens, and pray that you do not get encountered!!!
Once prompted to reform your party, select Zidane, Steiner, Freya and Amarant, and save your game!
