FFIX Excalibur II Perfect Game (Version X) - 48 Maliris
Items: The Tower, Genji Armor (stolen)
Now that we are back in Memoria, we can proceed with fighting the first of the four Chaos Guardians. On the screen where you pick up the Tower, it is possible to get through that screen without an encounter but very unlikely. Lucky for me, I did manage to get through there for a second time in all 3 of my PG runs! In the event of getting encountered, knock out everyone but Zidane and Flee to prepare the party for Charge!
Some of the key abilities that have be learned during the challenge have been solely for this last boss gauntlet!
One thing to note: On each screen where you fight a chaos guardian, there are NO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS! So if you have to set up your party beforehand, do it on these screens!
Before fighting Maliris, set up your party as follows:
Freya - Holy Lance, Mythril Helm, Venetia Shield, Minerva's Plate, Barette
(Distract, MP Attack, Devil Killer, Dragon Killer, Antibody, Locomotion, Accuracy+)
Amarant - Kaiser Knuckles, Green Beret, Bone Wrist, Power Vest, Black Belt
(Body Temp, MP Attack, Devil Killer)
Zidane - The Tower, Green Beret, Bone Wrist, Judo Uniform (Power Vest), Rebirth Ring
(Auto-Life, Bandit)
Steiner - Defender, Cross Helm, Venetia Shield, Diamond Armor, Power Belt
(Distract, MP Attack, Devil Killer)
Strategy for Maliris:
The strategy is the same as it was at the end of Disc 3, attack with Freya and Amarant, Zidane is on standby as a medic and Steiner uses Charge!, but each guardian carries a missable item that Zidane must steal before the battle is over.
In this case, Maliris holds the Genji Armor, which is a common steal. (as are the other missables) If you are lucky, Maliris should only get off at most two attacks. If Zidane is LV1, it may take an additional round of attacks, due to his low damage output compared to the other characters. More importantly, Zidane CANNOT be knocked out during the battle, as Maliris will kill the entire party when she dies in hopes of taking you down with her! Auto-Life will restore Zidane to 1 HP and the battle is won.
Now even though a new event in the Nero Family Side Quest has been completed, do not go back to the entrance but proceed normally. This is to reduce encounters should you get a great battle! Let the final FMV of the challenge play out (just like the one in Oeilvert) because it is not worth the time to skip (10 seconds) and save at the hidden save point.
Target Time - 11:30:00
