The Desert Palace is one of the toughest segments to complete without getting a random encounter, as you have to go nearly 15 screens before the next save point. However, by making an intermediate save, this area is no longer frustrating as it was before.

Set up your party for the Vaila Pira battle before saving:

Vivi - Flame Staff, ----- , ----- , ----- , -----

Freya - Holy Lance, Mythril Helm, Diamond Gloves, Chain Mail, Power Belt (Ability Up, MP Attack, Bird Killer, Insomniac)

Quina - Fork, Green Beret, Egoist's Armlet, ----- , Yellow Scarf (Ability Up, Millionaire)

Dagger - Magic Racket, Green Beret, Magic Armlet, Mythril Vest, Feather Boots (Ability Up, Auto-Float, Chemist)

A big and helpful piece of info, the screen after the moogle (the one with the magical staircase) has NO ENCOUNTERS whatsoever, so wait to save until getting the last of the treasures.

The strategy for Vaila Pira is very different with Freya in the party than it was in previous versions. With Freya's setup above, she can deal around 5000 damage per attack. This would normally take 3 attacks to win, but there are two additional increases to the damage that can be exploited. If the enemy is asleep, then you get an additional 50% increase, and if a character is under the Berserk status, then their physical attack is boosted by 50% as well!!!

So Freya can get up to five boosts to her attack! Very powerful indeed! If you are following Path A, then Freya will need the Berserk status in order to deal enough damage, as she is at Level 1. Dagger will need to cast Berserk before Freya begins attacking, though due to the story she has a 50% chance of failing.....

The fastest way to victory is having Freya attack first and then Quina casts Night on Vaila Pira (if you learned Night during the Fossil Roo segment), or Vivi casts Sleep (if his turn comes next or you do not have access to Night). Then if the boss' turn comes up while asleep, its turn is skipped, allowing Freya to finish it off next turn!!!

The two attacks have to deal on the high end of the damage scale, so it is possible to fail in two attacks. Basically you need the first attack to deal around 4700, then 7600 for the sleep-boosted attack.

Dagger - Auto-Float, Auto-Potion

It's a good idea to save before reverting back to Zidane's party.

As Zidane, you will have to make two trips through the Airship dock and its best if you accept only one encounter each way. Though if you are very lucky, you can make it to the teleporter without an encounter at all!!! On one of my attempts, I got 0 encounters on the way to Kuja but I ended up with two on the way back. Make sure to bring Freya, Amarant and Vivi with you to the Lost Continent, and pick up the Namingway Card before you leave!

Also if Zidane's trance gauge is still short of being completely full, then you need to encounter an Ogre just like in the last video and wait for a Flame attack. This is the LAST CHANCE to get it full for the Shell Dragon battle at Pandemonium.

Once on the Lost Continent, save!
