FFVIA - Locke Solo: Final Battles 3/3
Alright, Kefka! The battle I expected to be predictable sure turned out to be epic beyond belief! I should owe this to the fact that I wasn't exactly aware of what I was doing. Whilst I did know Kefka's AI well and what each phase had for me, I wasn't very well acquainted with the intervals between Kefka's attacks, and I was not even entirely sure if I had enough HP to survive his most deadly blows. I had only fought him once, even though I had got to the third tier at least a couple dozen of times (getting owned by Doom first, and then Repose, having equipped Safety Bit). I knew the first three tiers inside and out, but wasn't yet sure how this one would go.
And there you have it, this battle appears to be full of surprise as much as it was for me. The first time I fought him (I lost because of Hyperdrive which takes off around 90-95% of Locke's max HP), I remembered that I could allow myself to attack him twice and heal before he attacks after Heartless Angel. That was right, but what I forgot about was the random Holy casting Lightbringer is capable of. This made Locke's attack take much more time than it otherwise would and ordering Terra to commit suicide made it even worse -- I was about to get attacked. It missed, and I lucked out in a similar way on many more occasions in this battle.
When Kefka readies Forsaken, the solo challenger should remember to attack him only when the head appears, as attacking him after he has done it leads to painful counters which, coupled with his other attacks, is next to death.
Even just waiting for the 'head phase' to start is not entirely safe. Even by opening the Item menu as soon as possible, you can't be sure Kefka doesn't use Havoc Wing twice in a row. I nearly died twice. By the way, though you *could* Defend, you would also leave yourself no chance to do the necessary attacking in the next phase. Of course, one could just wait until everything's absolutely clean and you're guaranteed success, but I'm not exactly that type of player.
But my luck doesn't stop even until the last second of the battle. I wasn't keeping count of Kefka's HP at all and, after another Forsaken, I suddenly have this urge to hit him, as if I knew intuitively that this would finish him off. This was a ballsy thing to do, but the thing is, it WAS the final blow and it did finish him off.
So yeah, I've learned my lesson after taking this challenge. And that is, solo games are as fun as you make them, that being achieved by taking risk, not knowing mathematics whilst being sure you do know the game and being leveled to the point where no attack is an ant scratch and yet not an instant game over either. I've had a lot of fun and will probably play another FF6 solo challenge in a not-too-distant future. Which character that will be, I do not know, though I do have a few ideas in mind.
Thanks for watching!
