FFTA - Level 2 Game Part XVI: Ritz
The most extreme mission so far, mainly thanks to horrible luck in the beginning.
This mission is complete when Ritz dies. Ritz has about half of the HP Mateus's HP, so this should be easy, right? Wrong! While Mateus's minions could be banished with revival techniques, Ritz's allies are not undead (d'oh!) and happen to be fast, deadly and all over the place. To make matters worse, both Ritz and Shara are immune to most status effects.
My strategy was to doom Ritz's party, then put them to sleep. In 3 turns, they all would be gone leaving Ritz and Shara the only ones standing, in which case the battle would've been somewhat easier.
But things went wrong. The first Doom status got my characters, not the enemy party, as did the following Chroma Gem (sleep on either party). Sucks to rely on gambling, eh? I had Fortune Rings (null sleep and doom) equipped in case of such misfortune; otherwise, I would stand no chance.
The third attempt, which was casting Doom at the enemy party, succeeded. The bad news was that the Assassin avoided the status despite not being immune to it. You'd expect better things from units with Concentrate, eh? Well, that's life to you. Haha.
Things went downhill from here with one of my three moogles somehow dying. After Marche passed away, it was two moogles against three Viera (technically, Ritz is a Viera).
I tried to disable the Assassin with Dagger, but it failed. I then stopped those attempts because I would have been killed if I completely forgot about the main aim and concentrated my offense on a not-so-important unit.
I need to point out a few nuances here. Even with Damage = MP and Angel Rings, fighting against three characters at once is extremely dangerous. Moreover, Ritz usually Doublecasts her spells. With less luck, it means she can rape a moogle of his Auto-Revive status without anyone's help!
There's one more thing. I didn't really intend to do this mission this soon and planned to do other things in the meantime, e.g. completing some missions. However, I hadn't saved for hours and, having stepped onto a newly unlocked area, was forced into this mission. The laws were not the worst, but still not a great advantage to me: Copycat was banned and I had nothing to cancel it (not that I allow myself to manipulate laws though)! This means that I couldn't allow myself to repeat the same action in a row.
You will see me have spectacular luck in the last half of the battle, and I'm surprised myself how I finished this mission after the catastrophic beginning.
Notice how I try to survive by Smiling a unit who has absorbed damage with Damage = MP, giving him a turn and, with it, 5 MP which is enough to survive any single attack.
A very difficult battle, let's see how different the final missions will be!
