FFXII - NLBLLG Part XIX: Mateus
It's been a long time since the previous NLBLLG video, almost a month. I hope this one is worth the wait.
Put simply, Mateus is HELL in NLBLLG. Reasons? Sure.
1) The Azers.
You can't kill them, because you'll gain experience. To survive Blizzards, you should have the Dawn Shard (DS) equipped on a person who should be put in front of EVERY Azer (and thus absorb all their spells). As you can see, this challenge requires precise character placing.
2) Hate.
All Espers attack the character attracting the most hate, i.e. the most active one. In our case, Balthier is the one, so he will be targeted the moment he appears.
There is more than one method of fighting Mateus in this challenge, but this video depicts the one that worked for me.
The characters we use: Balthier (d'oh!), Basch and Ashe, also one mysterious character that will appear in the very end and own. Watch the video until the finale to find out his name!
Please note that the beginning of the video will show me mess up on purpose. If you read the video description, you will get the explanation of the tactical inaccuracies and failures to understand what exactly is crucial.
First of all, have Balthier in Haste. No Berserk, don't even think about it. Azers don't wait any long to appear and chances are Bal will decide to shoot the wrong way. He won't kill anyone but will get murdered immediately himself and his turns will be in vain.
Anyway, Mateus begins by casting Reflect and it can be a good idea to shoot him as quickly as possible before he starts hurtin' YOU. Equip Bal the DS*, Blizzards are about to come his way.
* Basch and Ashe receive NO damage from Blizzard with their best helms and the DS, Balthier MAY receive some.
Our means of dealing damage is as follows:
(slowest battle speed)
1) Balthier is revived and switched out, either Ashe or Basch is on the field with the DS equipped. The character revives the other one if necessary.
2) Mateus targets the DS user with a normal attack (usually).
3) Once he does, Balthier will NOT be targeted (seldom exception: Balthier appears in front of the DS user and is targeted by an Azer. You can't switch the DS at the speed of light so you are losing a turn, nothing to do but cry at your disastrous misfortune).
4) Balthier targets Mateus with a regular attack. Sirius + Onion/Silent Shot is the way to go, it doesn't matter which ammo of the two is equipped.
(you switch the battle speed to the fastest)
5) Baltheir becomes the party leader and runs away while charging an attack. If the DS user is still unable to run (has just used a PD), do the changing equipment trick (CET from now on).
6) The two escape and Balthier shoots, usually after the DS user dies. Wait for Balthier to shoot, THEN do the CET and equip the DS.
7) Run the hell away and keep shooting and hope you can shoot at least once before Mateus kills you (or you receive damage from the Azers, which may very well happen). I have got anywhere from none to four shots.
8) Once Balthier is dead, switch in Basch or Ashe, change the battle speed to the slowest, revive Bal, revive the other character, get killed (more often that not), switch in the character alive with the DS own, rinse and repeat.
That's it in a nutshell, well, until Mateus reaches 50% max HP. It's much more fun that it may appear, because so many things affect your performance and every turn is unlike another.
And now, MISTAKES. I will indicate the time in the video where you can mess up:
1:10 - learn to use the enviroment to your advantage. If you don't delay Mateus's attacks by jogging around the field, you will run out of Phoenix Downs before THE time.
2:14 - the DS user should follow Balthier in his escape, so do the CET.
2:18 - never forget to equip the DS. EVER.
Later in the video, Mateus casts Slow (a rare phenomenon). Hastega Motes are useless here, you should be glad that he's slowing you down instead of killing you anyway.
In the end of the video, we've got some insane luck. Ashe blocks using her shield three times in a row and Bal gets a critical.
In the end of the video, Mateus reaches 50% HP and kills everyone with Blizzaja. Azers start casting Curaga which heals him for more hit points than you can hope to take away.
There's only one way to end the battle at this point, no alternatives, I'm afraid.
