FF6 - Low Level Game Part VIII: Cranes, FlameEater, Ultros 3
The three boss battles shown in this video are quite remote from each in the storyline, especially if you watched the Magitek Research Facility boss video on the series (where difficult bosses essentially followed each other with little or no breaks in between).
Cranes:
This battle was fought almost immediately after Magitek Research Facility. Not unlike the previous boss fights, it is also very annoying and required many attempts to be done the right way.
Basically, you've got a crane to your left and a crane to your right. They either attack your party, mostly casting powerful spells, or heal themselves with either lightning or fire, depending on the target. Once one part is healed 3 times with its element, it unleashes a full-party attack that always leads to the game over screen.
You've got two choices, to equip Wall Rings (Auto-Reflect) or get other Relics. If you neglect the Wall Rings, chances are you won't survive for too long (as you can see on this video on the example of Setzer who has just joined and can not be equipped at this point). If you do keep them on, the cranes' spells will be reflected back to them and they will reach that 3rd level very quickly.
What you should hope is that Gau gets to use 2 Aqua Rakes on each part (Edgar should help him with Drill, by the way)before that level is reached and your party is obliterated.
This requires many attempts and depends almost entirely on luck.
FlameEater:
A very hard battle if you haven't bought Ice Rods, otherwise, very easy. Simply toss them at the FlameEater and him only (killing the Balloons leads to experience gain) with your Wall Rings off. No need to heal here, an easy battle.
Ultros 3:
Now that you are able to buy Rods, the difficulty of this boss battle also depends on the amount of Flame and/or Thunder Rods you've purchased.
Your biggest fear in this battle is Ultros's Tentacle attack, which is able to wipe away the entire party. Sometimes it leaves somebody alive (usually Locke) with miserable HP, sometimes it doesn't. Ulty also likes to follow a Tentacle by another one before you are able to recover properly. That blooming tosser!
Personally I had enough Rods to make the battle shorter but not enough to end it with Rods only, so I had to use another strategy.
Cast Fire with Terra 5 times and Ulty will glow red. In this phase he will counter every spell our party can throw at him, either via the Magic command or by tossing a weapon, with a level 3 spell of the exact element you attacked him with. If we equip Wall Rings, we won't get hurt in his counterattacks but Ultros will damage himself quite severely. This extra damage is enough to end the battle quicker.
Therefore, save your Rods until Ultros glows red and only then use them. Before that your top priority should be casting Fire over and over until the desired phase is reached.
Once Relm appears, use Sketch and hope it doesn't miss. The battle should be over.
