I'm okay with individual imperials looking to past glory as a way to help them through an especially traumatic time, but I do worry what happens if we don't help them see the horror of their past. Not just the invasions (which many seem to know were wrong), but the very ideals. The whole tree itself was poisoned from the moment Emet-Selch took power.

I'm thinking specifically of how the US chooses to deal the ugliest parts of its history. Some believe you should teach about oppression, racism, and slavery (for example) as antithetical to our founding, but I believe this only allows the poison to course through our veins in a different form. Confronting how central those horrifying parts are to our history is how we become freer and build a better society.

Individually, people like the magitek engineer can clearly take inspiration and heart through a sunnier reading of history. That myth inspired him to save lives by countermanding unethical orders! But this value seems limited.

Sooner or later, even the "good" Garlean patriots will have to confront the truth of the nation Emperor Solus set in motion. I cannot praise Endwalker enough for how it's grappling with this whole section.
