Final Fantasy VII Remake being released in multiple installments (or episodic content) is less about ripping gamers off, and more about the necessary economics of video game design, development and distribution.

While money certainly plays a factor, I'm not inclined to think that this move by SE is as malicious as some gamers are inclined to believe. I do believe they are telling the truth when they say the game cannot fit onto one disc. There's really no reason to lie about that given the fact that digital content these days has virtually no limit and many gamers (especially RPG fans still buy hard-copy discs)

I believe the real reason is that it's simply going to cost SE too much money to remake this game such that they could realistically sell the final product at $60 a head and still turn a profit. Let's face it, no Japanese Role Playing Game (JRPG) since the original Final Fantasy VII has ever sold as many copies as the original Final Fantasy VII.

The target audience for the JRPG genre has shrunk over the years. Thus, I believe SE is right to assume that the Final Fantasy VII remake will do well, but probably would not eclipse the sales numbers of the original game. This is also why I beleve the remake is being built as a more action-oriented experience. And if my assumptions are true, then SE is smart to break the remake into multiple installments and make the combat more action-centric. It's the only way SE can give their fans something they've been dying to play for years, while attracting a younger gaming generation with different sensibilities and ensuring that they are able to actually make a proper return on their investment.

So for the gaming illuminati conspiracy theorists, I don't believe Square-Enix is just "trying to make a buck." I think they genuinely want to give their fans something they will love. Not for altruistic reasons, but because pleasing your followers is the best way to ensure your company stays in business.
