Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - Playing around with multiple blue materia linking to the same magic
Just doing some testing before going into hard mode. Hard mode doesn't let you use items, so controlling MP becomes infinitely more important.
As far as I can tell, there is still no weapons or armour with linkage between 3 materias, so I wanted to find out what happens when you have multiple blue materia linking with the same magic, different materia orbs).
Blue Materia used:
On Aerith: (linked with Fire (One of them is a Fire and Blizzard materia))
1. Magic focus
2. HP absorption
3. MP absorption
4. Swiftcast
5. Magnify
On Cait Sith (linked with Petrify (one of them is a Poison and Petrify materia))
1. Magnify
2. Synergy
3. MP Absorption
The Poison and Petrify is not linked with Synergy because that would make the synergy cast alternating between Bio and Petrify.
The idea is to have Aerith cast different iterations of fire to trigger Cait Sith's Quake synergy cast and see if all other blue materia effects proc. Well the answer is a resounding yes. As you can see, when Aerith AOE cast Fire/Fira in the first battle, she got back both HP and MP. On the other hand I used Cait Sith to cast Comet first to deplete some significant amount of MP first. When Synergy kicked in, Cait Sith was doublecasting AOE Quakes and got back all of his MP in the end. This shows that as long as it is the same magic, it matters not whether it is the same orb, every blue materia linked would have their effects kick in.
Additionally, this also works for dual magic materias like Fire/Ice, Thunder/Wind, Petrify and Poison. I also at one point tried to use materias on different levels for a test, apparently as long as you are using the level that is available to everything, all effects would kick in as well. (I tried it with one that only went up to Fira linked with Magnify, so I only got to use AOE Fira). I test ran this so much that even the materia got maxed out eventually lol.
Swiftcast is mostly for using Firaga. When Aerith pull Cait Sith into the Arcane Ward, using Firaga may have taken too long for AI Cait to stay inside the ward for the double synergy cast.
Having 5 linked materia sets is excessive, but I don't think it is outrageous to have 2 or 3 sets specialised for some battles or bosses that have one key weakness. It should be pretty good to get a massive MP refund on hard mode. The best thing is, synergy cast does not cost MP. So it is basically free HP/MP or whatever effects you want to put on them. Unfortunately you don't get to do this with Comet, since there is only one (well don't quote me on the possibility of getting another one somehow on hard, that's unfamiliar territory to me).
On a side note, I use Cait Sith because I really like him. The crit buff also makes it so that Firaga from Aerith does not even need a stagger to hit 9999, though that didn't seem necessary this one time.
You can also use Aerith / Cait Sith's defensive synergy skill to pull the other one into Aerith's Arcane Ward for doublecasting or avoid damage. More free MP for Cait Sith and more stunlock or petrification for the enemies. Bioga would have been more ideal for the second fight, but Petrify has a much clearer visual representation of its procs for observation.
