Fractalus (PC) gameplay levels 6 & 7
Fractalus by Luke's Software & Design is based on Rescue on Fractalus! by Lucasfilm Games. This remake uses capabilities of current PCs to offer 4K resolution and high frame rates. Developers of the original RoF for 8 bit computers wanted to make it a Star Wars tie-in, but George Lucas forbade it. Landscapes are rendered with fractal geometry. There is a good TOD change effect, with the yellow skies turing into a reddish twilight that later gives way to darkness.
In a war against the alien race called the Jaggi, some of your Ethercorps allies have been shot down on Fractalus. Take your Valkyrie fighter behind Jaggi lines to rescue them.
Watch out for Jaggi laser turrets and saucers. Your antimatter bubble torpedoes take them out in one hit. The downed Valkyrie fighters will show up as blips on your radar. Fractulus' atmosphere is strongly acidic, so pilots will not venture out of their ship for more than a couple kilometers. You'll need to get close enough before turning off your engines. Only then will a pilot approach. When they knock on the doors, open your airlock to let them in. Do it QUICKLY though, or they will succumb to the planet's noxious air. Saved pilots will give you their ship's remaining fuel supply. There is one rather fiendish trick that the Jaggi have up their sleeve. You will know it when you see it.
Fractalus is available at www.lsdwa.com as freeware for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux. There's also a VR version. One welcome addition is the ability to leave your game and resume it later.
