0FIST is a metroidvania game set in a dystopian world where anthropomorphic animals form a resistance against an oppressive machine army. The game combines exploration, combat, and platforming in a stunning 2.5D environment with a diesel-punk aesthetic.
The game features a sprawling map and a deep combat system. The overall presentation is impressive, with high-quality models, textures, lighting, and voice acting. Animations are smooth and realistic. The environments are atmospheric and intricately designed, providing a wealth of exploration, secrets, collectibles, and upgrade opportunities. It is however often unclear which path leads to moving the story forward, so back-tracking becomes inevitable.
Platforming controls are smooth, and satisfying, with all of the core mechanics unlocked early. The combat system allows you to quickly switch between three different weapons, each with its own combos that are unlocked with a skill tree. There are also dashes, parries, and executions to deal with the enemies. Combat is generally fluid, but occasionally combos fail to register.
However, despite the large number of combos, there is not the array of weapons and attack diversity common in other metroidvanias. Added to this is the lack of variety in enemies, combined with their banality and slowness, and occasional difficulty spikes. On balance, combat is decent, but no-where near as refined as the platforming.
In conclusion, FIST is a very solid metroidvania game. It has about 12 hours of polished high quality content that make it stand out among other games in a crowded genre. If you are looking for a fun and challenging action-adventure game with a compelling if predictable story, you should definitely give this game a try. It's not perfect, but it definitely deserves more attention and recognition.
