0Golden Light is a first-person horror game, in which you descend into a meaty underworld known as "The GUT" to save your loved one from being devoured.
The gameplay is straightforward. Your objective in each level is to search for a set number of keys, which unlock the path to the next level. There's a roguelike twist - when you meet your demise, you're transported to a hub world. Here, the gold you've collected can be spent to reduce the challenge on your next attempt, before returning to the start of the level on which you died. This system of permanent progression, coupled with procedurally generated levels of manageable size, keeps the game consistently engaging.
Weapons come with limited durability and availability, often making stealth the most practical approach. To restore health, players need to consume their items or weapons, which can have active randomized positive or negative attributes. This dynamic adds a fresh layer of novelty to each playthrough.
The art-style is surreal and gory, but its suits the game, creating an unsettling atmosphere. Each randomly generated level however doesn't pull from a huge pool of assets. The sound design is less impressive, with poor quality music and sound effects, and overuse of audio queues.
The gameplay too has some issues however. Combat is dull and repetitive, while controls are unintuitive. Enemies can be bullet-sponges. The game lacks clarity and guidance on its mechanics, story, and objectives. The level of randomness too heavily affects balance and difficulty.
Overall, it's on OK game, but This is not a well made game designed to look janky. It tries to pass off the lack of polish as a type of charm, but it doesn't cover a lot of shortcomings.
The horror aspect lacks depth beyond cheap jump scares. The humour comes from absurdity, and for me, fell completely flat.
All that said, it's still a memorable game that manages to make clearing every level feel rewarding.
