"Tandem: A-Tale-of-Shadows" is a unique puzzle platformer in which you control two protagonists in turn to work together to overcome obstacles and unravel the disappearance of magician Thomas Kane. The protagonists' perspectives are orthogonal to each other. As Emma, you'll navigate a top-down world, utilizing your lantern to manipulate shadows, while Fenton, the animated teddy bear, can traverse the shadows in a side scrolling platformer. This transition between perspectives is both fluid and seamless.

The game is organised as a series of about 10 short puzzles maps in each of 5 chapters. The puzzles are well-designed and fun to solve, with each chapter introducing new mechanics, keeping the game somewhat enjoyable and engaging. The game is very well presented, akin to a gothic Alice in Wonderland. It crafts a contrast between the two worlds; One is the colorful and whimsical realm of Emma, while the other is the dark and eerie domain inhabited by Fenton.

However, there are issues. The controls are basic and sluggish, especially for Fenton's platforming sections. This frustration is exacerbated as the game progresses, as the platform segments take a more central stage. The puzzles have a low difficulty curve and are not very challenging. Most of them are predictable and repetitive, requiring little thinking or creativity, or limited trial and error. The story too is under-developed, with unclear motivations, poor voice acting, and forgettably bland characters.

In conclusion, Tandem is a decent puzzle platformer game with distinctive mechanics providing a well presented and pleasingly unique gaming experience. It does however fall short in terms of story, variety and polish. With about 4 hours of content, it's not a bad game, but it fails to do anything to elevate it to a must play status.
