Frigates and Anthems Make Every Token a Champ in this Naya Midrange Brew! (M:tG Arena Standard Bo3)
I'm an old school MtG player. In the early days, white and black weenie decks were scary to play against partly because of powerhouses like savannah lions, but also because of bad moon and crusade, anthems that gave their whole team of knights and lions +1/+1and only cost 2 mana! In our Standard format now, we have access to 2 different anthems that cost only 2 mana. I think that combined with a token strategy that leverages the anthems strongly, they might actually be good and that's what we're testing
We're running 7 2 mana anthems. The all star here is Anthem of Champions from Foundations. Straight up 2 mana anthem! Then we just got Lumen Class Frigate in Edge of Eternities. it 2 mana for a spacecraft that pretty easily gets activated as an anthem.
Warleader's Call is a 3 mana anthem that lets us ping our opponents whenever our creatures enter. It's worthy of inclusions a one of since we're in the colors and we do have good synergy to get those pings.
To utilize our anthems to maximum effect, we want to create tokens as efficiently as possible. Voice of Victory is great at doing this while it disrupts our opponents' plans. Really, it's just an amazingly good 2 drop.
Frontline Rush lets us create 2 1/1 goblins at instant speed which can set up blowouts during our opponents attacks. It also can act as a Howl From Beyond that can help us close out games.
Carrot Cake is an excellent utility card that creates a couple of bunny tokes for us, gains us a little life and fixes a couple of draws.
Hop to Its give us the most bunnies for our buck. 3 bodies for 3 mana can translate to a lot of power and toughness with anthems.
The traditional downside of anthems is that if you have no creatures, they do nothing. That's why we want some preferrebly non creature permanents that create tokens on their own to make sure we don't have to keep using cards to generate tokens. The best way to do this is with Fountainport. Fish tokens on demand from our lands is what we need.
Windcrag Siege is a 3 mana enchantment that, on the Jeskai side, will create a 1/1 hasty lifelinking token every upkeep. It's slow, but it makes a great token for free each turn.
Elspeth Storm Slayer is hereto double our token production, crank out those tokens, destroy our opponents' scary stuff and close out the game for us with huge flying attacks using her zero ability. She's the best top end for our strategy. I could see an argument for the white overlord, but I kinda hate those cards.
Heroic Reinforcements is a one of that could be a spectacular game winning play at the right moment. In practice, I have yet to draw this card in testing.
Caretaker's Talent is a powerful value engine since we're a token based strategy. We've got 3
Seam Rip, Get Lost and Ride's End will be our interaction. Standard is a format full of must kill threats, so I always feel nervous packing less than 6 or so removal spells.
Our mana value is high and we have good ways to use mana, so we're running Llanowar Elves. At whatever stage of the game we gain access to the elf, we'll have a use for the extra mana. We have a fair amount of boros colored spells which the elves can't help us cast as easily, but given that we are a mana hungry deck, I still think the elves are worth is.
We've got 24 lands and we do really need them. We've got one Restless Prairie as tech in addition to the Fountainports. It's great in a deck like ours that goes wide. The mana would really be improved by Temple Garden, but we're doing the best with what's available. We may get some awkward mana draws.
\So that's the deck! In testing, this deck is resilient and fun. We're very good against sweepers as all of the anthems mean that we can create a scary battlefield just by making a token or two. Standard is a scary place though. Let's see if we can get some wins down here in gold tier after the reset.
