With WOTC basically saying that Vivi is getting banned on Nov 10, hopefully people won't keep playing that deck in the zero stakes environment of the Arena Standard ladder. I'm running back one of my favorite decks that got a real boost from Edge of Eternites.
The concept behind this deck is that ramping is a good thing to do in a control deck because it allows you to play cheap overbodied threats and still hold up counterspells.
Llanowar Elves are here. Glimpse the Core puts a forest on the battlefield for only 2 mana. Herd Heirloom gives us mana for creatures and also can help draw cards. Summon Fenrir is proven value from Final Fantasy that ramps, boosts up a creature and finally draws us a card on a 3/2 that can attack and block.
Our threats are the hardest hitters we can find for the lowest mana value which best allows us to leverage our ramp mana. Also, they happen to be disruptive to our opponents' plans.
We've replaced our Szas's Chocobo this time around for Pawpatch Recruit.
Keen Eyed Curator is a 3/3 for 2 that lets us eat cards from graveyards cheaply and repeatedly, and grows into a 7/7 trample. Webstrike Elite is a 3/3 reach for 2, which we can cycle to destroy artifacts or enchantments.
Frenzied Baloth 3/2 trample haste for 2 that makes our other creatures uncounterable. Diversion Unit is a one of. In general, if we can interact with our opponents with creatures that also can attack, that's our preference.
Our 3 drops also bring huge green bodies and added utility. Scrapshooter is a 4/4 for 3 that can gift a card to blow up an artifact or enchantment. Very often, it is worth it to do so. Surrak, Elusive Hunter is a great trampling body that draws us cards when our opponents target our stuff with removal or counters. Regal Imperiosaur is the beefiest boi, being a 5/4 for only 3 mana. We are interested in the most power and toughness we can get for the mana value. Our Herd Heirlooms can give it trample . I'm trying Spinner of Souls for the first time in this deck and it seems very strong. A 4/3 reach for 3 is already interesting to us. Its ability means our other creatures replace themselves when they die. It's a must remove threat as it seriously nerfs any removal spells as long as it's out there.
All of our ramp will let us deploy these cheap threats while holding up counterspells and interaction. Spell pierce and Royal Treatment are our 1 mana counter effects. Pierce is great at catching sweepers when we're on the draw.
Spectral Denial is a counter anything effect unless our opponent spends X. We get a bonus to X for each creature we have with power 4 or greater. This will usually be at least 1 but can be 2 or more, in which case, this spell can be one blue: counter anything. Repulsive Mutation can be one blue one green: counter target spell if we have a big creature on the board. It also can just put +1/+1 counters on a creature. It does have the downside of doing actual nothing if we don't control any creatures, so let's try to avoid that if we can.
We have other interaction besides counters as well. Into the Flood Maw is here as a great tempo play that can slow our opponents down or let us get through a critical attack. If you play Standard, you know how good this card is. Archdruid's charm a versatile interaction piece. Consult the Star Charts, from EoE is a great scalable card draw spell.
There are 21 lands in the mana base including our Breeding Pools, perhaps the most important addition from EoE. 21 is I think the right number of lands given how much ramp we have access to.
I always enjoy playing with this deck, and I think it's actually strong. I think the Star Charts will help a ton. Let's see if we can get some wins with this update of an old favorite!
