95We take an exclusive first look at Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, a board game by Cephalofair games that is a standalone, more casually geared version of the original Gloomhaven. Thank you so much to Price Johnson at Cephalofair games for sending this to us!
So what's the difference between this smaller version (found at Target!) and the original Gloomhaven? Well in Jaws of the Lion, players will be able to start the Gloomhaven experience with a smaller, more affordable box that still contains miniatures, monsters, and a campaign like the original.
The four new starting classes include the Valrath Red Guard, Inox Hatchet, Human Voidwarden, and Quatryl Demolitionist. The map is played on the 2 scenario books, and it comes with an amazing storage solution! No plano boxes required to enjoy this game. There's even a tutorial, which comprises of 5 starting scenarios, each which steadily introduce new mechanics. In these, players will be given simplified scenario cards to streamline their learning experience.
In Jaws of the Lion, players will be playing as adventurers of the Jaws of the Lion mercenary group. Also designed by Isaac Childres (who designed the original Gloomhaven), Jaws of the lion is your role-playing (think of DnD), fantasy adventure campaign game as you travel the world of Gloomhaven. Except in this tabletop board game, the map only shows Gloomhaven instead of the larger world it resides in (that doesn't mean the scenarios are all in the city, though).
And yes, we will be reviewing this game, as well as Frosthaven when it comes out. We are still in the midst of our current Gloomhaven base game session and have plenty of videos on that to come!
