Yugioh Life Before Board Games (Our Anonymous YouTube Channel Before Shelfside!)
Before all of those gateway board games like Ticket To Ride, Catan, and Carcassonne, the creators of Shelfside were doing something different: playing Konami's Trading Card Game Yu-Gi-Oh, a popular card game based off the anime tv show that was ported to the US by 4kids. Initially gripped by this popular TV show and pojo guide, I slowly became integrated in the card game ecosystem. Daniel and I would buy packs, build decks, and go to tournaments, but perhaps most importantly, we were inspired by Yugitubers like SImplyUnlucky and started our own YouTube channel back in middle school. Called Raylusted, Daniel and I would remain anonymous and analyze the game while sitting behind the camcorder. Some videos even did really well, like the Vylon deck profiles.
Some notable moments of Yugioh include making an unofficial high school club that spawned from the debate team, testing decks on Dueling Network for hours, and getting Top 8 at the Fanime convention Yugioh tournament. And of course, the high school starting quarterback became a committed yugioh player. The TCG experience is something I'm very glad to have had, and modern board games swooped in in late high school through Wil Wheaton's TableTop series. With games like Betrayal at House on the Hill, Pandemic, and Munchkin, I was totally hooked. Enjoy hearing my adolescent voice in the flashback montages!
Yu-Gi-Oh (Yugioh) is similar to other TCGs like Magic: The Gathering, or Fantasy Flight's Android Netrunner in that it invites passionate, invested enjoyment with its possibility of competitiveness, research, and community. Players buy starter packs or pre-made decks, and play each other in a 2 player fashion.
